Morningstar has entered a multi-year exclusive strategic collaboration with CME Group to bring derivatives products based on the Morningstar Market Indexes to market. For the first time, the Morningstar Market Indexes (currently named the CRSP Market Indexes until the previously announced rebrand takes effect in July 2026) will power derivatives, expanding how clients and investors can access and use these benchmarks within a more connected investment ecosystem.
As part of the collaboration, futures on the Morningstar US Total Market Index are expected to begin trading at the end of June. CME Group clients will gain access to the most definitive measure of the US equity market—an index that currently underpins about $2 trillion in assets, including the world’s largest mutual fund. The addition of futures broadens choice for investors and expands the index’s role in the investment ecosystem, increasing liquidity and accessibility, and reinforcing the strength and credibility of its underlying design across a broader set of investment applications. A foundational building block for investors, the index represents 100% of the investable US equity market.
This development reflects continued momentum in scaling our index franchise. The CRSP acquisition, the rebranding of the indexes, and the inclusion of the Morningstar name in Vanguard fund titles have significantly increased visibility, adoption, and reach. This collaboration builds on that foundation by extending our indexes into the derivatives market, creating new opportunities for growth and deeper integration across investment use cases. It also brings together two leading Chicago-based financial institutions with a shared history of shaping global markets.
The additional scale that will come with extending the Morningstar US Total Market Index ecosystem creates a powerful cycle of liquidity, adoption and growth around the index, enabling us to further expand our capabilities and better serve our new and existing clients. We believe this milestone will further accelerate the growth of our index business and extend the reach and impact of the Morningstar Market Indexes worldwide.
