Morningstar has officially introduced the Morningstar Market Indexes to investors, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of our index business and an important step in the continued integration of CRSP into Morningstar.
The completed rebrand means the CRSP Market Indexes will now be known as the Morningstar Market Indexes, with each index in the family also adopting the Morningstar name. Built on CRSP’s trusted research foundation and proven methodology, the Morningstar Market Indexes already underpin more than $3 trillion in investor assets. At the center of the suite is the Morningstar US Total Market Index, our flagship US equity benchmark that captures 100% of the investable US equity market and underlies many of the industry’s most widely used investment products, including the world’s largest mutual fund.
The transition to Morningstar Market Indexes comes at a time of growing momentum for the index family. Vanguard has adopted the Morningstar name for its mutual funds and ETFs tracking these benchmarks, and CME Group recently launched futures tied to the Morningstar US Total Market Index, expanding the ways investors can access and use these indexes. We also see opportunities to further integrate the Morningstar Market Indexes across Morningstar’s research, analytics, and investment platforms. Beginning in October, we expect to begin using the rebranded indexes as category benchmarks where applicable.
The introduction of the Morningstar Market Indexes represents an exciting chapter for Morningstar and the continued growth of the index business. Built on a trusted research foundation and increasingly adopted across the investment landscape, the indexes are well positioned to expand their reach, support a broader range of investment applications, and bring their benefits to investors around the world.
