According to the qualitative phase of the third annual Morningstar Voice of the Asset Owner Survey, asset owners are navigating an increasingly challenging landscape that requires them to wear multiple hats.
The first phase of a two-part annual study undertaken by both Morningstar Indexes and Morningstar Sustainalytics gauged global asset owners’ attitudes on key issues related to investment policy, management of key stakeholders, sustainable investment approaches, and the strength of market data providers.
Earlier this year, Morningstar spoke with thirteen of the world’s leading asset owners across North America, Europe, and Asia. Our one-on-one discussions identified several top-of-mind issues, including geopolitics, communications with plan boards and key stakeholders, implementation of sustainable investment strategies, and increasing regulatory and transparency requirements. These observations set the stage for the broader quantitative survey of 500 asset owners to be fielded later this year.
Thomas Kuh – Head of ESG Strategy, Morningstar Indexes:
“Institutional investors play many different roles, as our recent one-on-one discussions revealed. These include global capital allocator, communicator and influencer, steward of global capital, and, importantly, operations manager. We’re looking forward to assessing these anecdotal observations against the backdrop of our full-scale quantitative survey of global asset owners launching in the coming months.”
